You Guys!
I have had more physical activity in the past few days than well, let’s just say some time.
But this week this has changed my mobility. From I can kind of move, to OMG it hurts to move. I guess you could call that progress.
I have no idea how I got here.
Wait, I know. Way, way back last fall we had plumbers come and tear up our lawn so they could replace our pipes from house to the sewer. Then they left us with 2 big mounds of dirt and despite multiple cries of “don’t play in the dirt!” - she played in the dirt:
Thankfully, after a entire winter and spring of “get off the dirt"!”, the plumbers sent their landscapers to flatten out the dirt and level things off. They sprinkled about a coffee cup full of grass seed down and then booked it
It should come as no surprise then that days later there was not one blade of grass that grew. We thought about getting more seed but that gets expensive real fast and so we started to call around for some sod prices.
We found a fair price, and I thought we could just lay it out on the dirt and in a couple hours we were done.
Nope. BW tells me I have to till the dirt. Want to know how much experience I have with a tiller?
Exactly.
But BW found a tiller to rent at Home Depot and yesterday I went and picked it up in the morning and tilled my heart out.
A few things about this tilling.
This thing takes gas! We have nothing, nothing that takes gas. We had to borrow a gas can from a neighbor to get gas to fill this thing.
It’s noisy. I had ear protection, but still.
Our dirt sucks so it only tilled a few inches deep but it’s better than nothing.
You till pulling backwards and it vibrates so much you till until til you can’t till no more and can’t feel your hands.
It only took me a few hours to till the spots and although we rented it for the day we actually got a credit upon return so the total cost was $45.00 with gas to use this thing.
Surprisingly, this thing folds up and I was able to return it in my small little Chevy Bolt.
This morning, the sod shows up: Crap. Now I have to install it.
Both BW and I had the thought: Is that going to be enough? When we ordered it we had in our minds that it would be double the amount at least.
Turns out it was enough. We could use another 4 rolls if we were really picky but we’ll see how this batch blends in. We can always get some more later if need be.
I’m not a professional landscaper, but we now have grass on the front lawn instead of mud and dirt. BW likes this fact.
Now comes the task of trying to keep it alive. We’re doing our best with the watering for now so here’s hoping that this all turns into one of those lawns you see in the magazines.
This is very doubtful but at least we don’t have a pile of mud in the front lawn.
We still had to tell the child to stay off the sod, so in a way nothing’s really changed, other than BW is happy with her front lawn.
And as we all know too well here: A happy wife is a happy life.
The rest is just details.
Remember: Hug your Landscaper.
