I am VERY familiar with these toys- in my house we call them "garbage toys." I've spoken to my kids extensively about the short-lived nature of their interest in these toys and the fact that they will most likely end up in a landfill or a whale's belly. My 8-year-old is just finally starting to get it to the point where it factors into her decision making. Even so, she still is a sucker for any plastic toy that's wrapped up in plastic in the form of a "surprise" (like those LOLZ balls they sell in Walgreens). Ugh!
Thankfully, she's not really a toy kid. Sure, she has some and the SpongeBob kit is just one example and she doesn't know what a LOLZ ball is yet so there's hope. :)
Never let her go down that road- it’s a slippery slope, haha. I remember as a kid my favorite toys were the pregnant dog toys where you didn’t know how many puppies would be in their litter. There is something so appealing about the element of surprise—which is why the LOLZ ball things can charge like $30 for a piece of garbage. Kids are just dying to know what is inside, even if it’s total crap.
