Getting the Balance Right
From Small Steps to a Big Girl Scooter. Pink Streamers are Standard Equipment
This took us a while to get here.
She clung to her 3 wheeled scooter for far too long, but she didn’t want to use this one because: balancing is hard.
New is hard.
The 3 wheels are easy. One foot on the board, and then you push and because there’s 2 wheels on the front it’s easy to balance and steer. She had the 3-wheeler figured out without a problem.
2 wheels were scary. 2 wheels were hard to use and hard to balance. 3 wheels were comfortable. We tried to get her to get on this scooter last year. I even bought her a brand name one so she didn’t have to learn on some piece of junk to learn on.
Last year she would have absolutely nothing to do with scooter. “It’s too scary”, she said. Everything was too scary.
But this year, she has friends. Friends that have 2 wheel scooters. She has to keep up with the Jones’s. Literally. Keep Up. She has to be able to scoot along with her friends if she wants to be included in the summer fun this summer.
This is What Progress Looks like
After dinner we were outside in the garden preparing for frost tonight by covering up our most delicate plants:
I suggested she get out the yet to be used razor scooter instead of the three wheeler and lo and behold she did not reject this idea. After a quick demonstration on how it’s different than her old scooter she had it figured out in no time.
This one has a bell and streamers. That pretty much sealed the deal.
“I’m balancing” she squealed as she cautiously glided up the driveway.
“Yes, you are ” I said as I quickly snapped the photo you see above.
“I love balancing”she said to me as we went inside for the night.
“That’s great”, I told her as I picked up the scooter and shooed her inside to go to bed.
“Let’s go, the scooter will be there tomorrow. It’s getting dark and it’s time for bed.”
Keeping it Balanced,
